About Alexander Wong

BACKGROUND
Unlike most academics, I worked in the industry for nearly 15 years prior to commencing my PhD. After graduating from Gothenburg University with a MSc. in Business Administration and a MSc. in informatics, I worked as Project Manager for business consulting-firms in Sweden and China. When living in Shanghai, I helped European multinationals to establish and expand on the Chinese market. Fascinated by my first-hand experience, on how International Business is changing the landscape of economic geography, I decided to return to academia to research and teach about this ongoing global shift.

RESEARCH
As a PhD candidate I study how the adoption of fashionable management concepts, such as Agile development and Lean production, shapes economic geography. Most often, management concepts are innovated in a different context from the adopting local organisation, which brings about extensive change from existing practices, leading to unexpected consequences and uncertain outcomes. Using the approach of relational economic geography, I am extending extant knowledge on the processes in play when management concepts are globally diffused within multinational firms.

Building on my practical experiences in international business, I have specifically been developing frontier knowledge on change and transfer of management practices in an international context. I adopt a broad methodological outlook, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods, however nothing beats getting out into the field, getting perspective on academia by real life challenges. I am a member of the Euro-Asia Management Studies Association, the European International Business Academy, the Chinese Globalization Association, and alumni at the Nordic Research School of International Business (NORD-IB). I regularly speak at conferences and workshops in Sweden and internationally.

TEACHING
Apart from lectures related to my above research-area, I mainly teach in International Business-courses such as Management of multinational enterprises, Managing across cultures, and International Strategic Management. My lectures in Economic Geography mainly revolves the Asian-region.
