About Jan Marton

Jan Marton's activities include research, teaching and engagement with practice.

The research is primarily about factors that affect uncertainty in financial reporting, and the effect of such uncertainty on the usefulness of financial statements. Specific research projects include uncertainty in loan loss provisioning in banks, uncertainty in principles-based disclosures in the notes, and the effect of different accounting standards and enforcement on the usefulness of accounting for boards. Other activities include mentorship for young scholars.

Teaching is done on all levels, from basic to doctoral courses. Topics covered include measurement issues for different accounting items, regulation, and financial statement analysis. A number of textbooks have been produced, e.g. on IFRS, accounting theory and basic accounting. Jan Marton also has administrative assignments within teaching, previously head of the program in business and economics, and currently vice dean for education. Substantive teaching for practitioners has also been carried out, which relates to engagement with practice.

Engagement with practice

Previously worked as certified public accounting, and as accounting specialist focused on IFRS. A large number of teaching assignments for auditors and accountants have been carried out. Some consulting work is done, e.g. in accounting for financial instruments. Publish texts for practitioners, e.g. as a columnist in the Swedish accounting profession's magazine.
